The best thing I have heard, so far, about the Dominican ways is their tree cutting law. One has to ask permission before cutting down any tree even in the city. From what I have heard its also difficult to get approved and cost some money that people are not willing to spend. so the trees are safer.
The one thing that treehuggers would hate is that its almost a must to use plastic or plastic bags. But for most things people reuse stuff (at least some stuff) more than they would in the US.
